About
I am a London based artist working with early photographic and printmaking processes such as Cyanotype and Photogravure.
My father was a seed merchant and we spent a lot of time as children in the back garden, or on the allotment where he grew most of our fruit and veg.
I have always grown plants and flowers on windowsills and doorsteps in all the various places I have lived in London. I graduated to this flat with a small South West facing balcony a while ago, and grow a lot of the flowers here that I photograph for my prints.
I originally trained as a figurative sculptor, and I still approach my work in a very sculptural way. I like to give the subjects the solidity and feel of a 3d object.
I love to play with scale too - from a tiny print that you can hold in your hand and examine, right up to the the increasingly large prints that I make - ‘monumental close-ups’ - where you can get lost in the tiny details of the hairs on a Poppy’s stem or the skin-like texture of a Rose petal.
To make Cyanotype prints I coat cotton rag paper with a light sensitive solution of iron salts and then leave it to dry in the dark. I then expose it to UV light under large format negatives, and finish up by washing the prints in water, where they develop their characteristic blue colour.
I also make photogravure prints, which are now done with a polymer coated plate, which is more environmentally friendly than the older methods. I transfer the photographic image to the plate, harden it and then ink it up like a traditional etching plate. The graphic effects and rich blacks work perfectly with the shadowy images and strong highlights I like to produce in camera.
I love the creativity of both of these processes. I think of them as offering a translation from the photographic image into a somewhat more mysterious and abstract representation.
Really that’s what I am fascinated with - to examine closely the simple things and look again at them in a different way.
